Ben je professioneel musicus, student of een gevorderd amateur en wil je je verdiepen en specialiseren in barokrepertoire? Kom dan van 1 tot en met 5 juli 2026 naar Zutphen en leer van internationale meesters op het gebied van de historische uitvoeringspraktijk!
Want dan vindt het Internationaal Barok Festival Zutphen plaats. Door heel de stad worden masterclasses, presentaties, workshops en concerten gegeven. Vijf dagen ligt de focus op de authentieke uitvoeringspraktijk, zowel vocaal als instrumentaal. Een unieke kans voor professionele musici, studenten en gevorderde amateurs om lessen te volgen van prominente, internationale meesters.
Het festivalthema in 2026 is ‘In de voetsporen van Constantijn Huijgens’.
Huygens was een veelzijdige figuur van de Nederlandse Gouden Eeuw die via zijn vele Europese reizen kunst en muziek met elkaar verbond en zo het ideaal van de homo universalis belichaamde: een bruggenbouwer tussen politiek, kunst en culturen. In dezelfde geest wil het Internationaal Barok Festival een brug slaan: tussen verschillende muziekstijlen, tussen muziek van vroeger en nu (waarbij oude en hedendaagse muziek elkaar aanvullen), tussen amateurs en professionals, en tussen uitvoerenden en het publiek.
Het festivalprogramma is in 2026 opgebouwd rond drie muzikale pijlers:
- De tijd van Huygens – met muziek die hij hoorde, bewonderde en zelf beoefende.
- De context vóór en ná Huygens – de late renaissance waaruit zijn wereld voortkwam, en de barok die na hem tot volle bloei kwam.
- De blijvende erfenis in Bach – zoals bij elke editie staat ook J.S. Bach centraal, ditmaal in herkenbare én verrassende uitvoeringen.
Deze pijlers komen tot leven in 26 voorstellingen, variërend van intieme concerten voor circa veertig luisteraars tot magistrale uitvoeringen in grote Zutphense kerken zoals de Walburgis- en de Sint-Janskerk.
HET FESTIVAL – PRAKTISCH
Werving en selectie
Bij aanmelding levert iedere deelnemer een cv en geluidsfragment aan, zodat de organisatie en de Meesters een goed beeld krijgen van niveau en geschiktheid. Na beoordeling en aanbetaling is deelname gegarandeerd. Men kan zich opgeven tot en met maandag 22 juni 2026
Globale dagindeling
De kern van het festival bestaat uit masterclasses. Iedere deelnemer krijgt minstens drie individuele lessen van circa een half uur. Deze vinden plaats in open setting: terwijl één deelnemer les krijgt, kijken anderen mee en leren zij indirect mee.
De dagen beginnen telkens met een gezamenlijke Tai Chi-sessie in de tuin van Dat Bolwerck, een meditatieve vorm van beweging die rust en balans brengt en daarmee de ideale basis vormt voor de muzikale activiteiten die volgen. Naast de individuele lessen bij een eigen Meester volgen de deelnemers ’s middags ensemblelessen en workshops, en krijgen zij gelegenheid hun voortgang tijdens korte presentatieconcerten te laten horen.

De Meesters van 2026
Ook in 2026 kan het festival rekenen op een internationaal team van vooraanstaande musici. Dankzij het netwerk van Johannette Zomer is een groot aantal meesters bereid masterclasses, workshops en concerten te verzorgen. Hun expertise bestrijkt zang, instrumentale specialisaties, ensemble coaching en aanvullende disciplines als mentale training en podiumpresentatie.

WORKSHOPS
Het aanbod qua vocale workshops varieert van een verdieping in de tekstbehandeling bij Bach en de expressieve mogelijkheden van barokrepertoire. Ook worden bredere stijlkaders aangeboden, zoals met monodie en madrigalen uit het begin 17e eeuw of met de 19e eeuwse liedkunst met forte-piano. Daarnaast zijn er praktijkgerichte workshops voor alle deelnemers over effectief oefenen of omgaan met podiumangst.

Are you a professional musician, student, or advanced amateur with a passion for Baroque music? Join us in Zutphen from 1–5 July 2026 and immerse yourself in the world of historical performance practice with leading international masters.
Throughout the city, masterclasses, presentations, workshops, and concerts will take place. For five days, the focus will be on authentic performance practice, both vocal and instrumental. A unique opportunity for professional musicians, students, and advanced amateurs to take lessons from leading international masters.
This year’s festival theme is “In the Footsteps of Constantijn Huygens.” Huygens was a polymath of the Dutch Golden Age who, through his many travels across Europe, explored art and music and embodied the ideal of the homo universalis: a bridge-builder between politics, art, and cultures. In that same spirit, the International Baroque Festival Zutphen aims to build bridges between old and new, between styles, between amateurs and professionals, and between musicians and audiences.

THE FESTIVAL – PRACTICAL INFORMATION
Recruitment and selection
Upon registration, each participant submits a CV and an audio recording so that the organizers and the Masters can form a clear impression of the participant’s level and suitability. After assessment and payment of the deposit, participation is guaranteed. Registration is open until Monday, 22 June 2026.
General daily schedule
The core of the festival consists of masterclasses. Each participant receives at least three individual lessons of approximately half an hour. These take place in an open setting: while one participant is being taught, others observe and learn indirectly.
The days begin with a joint Tai Chi session in the garden of Dat Bolwerck. This meditative form of movement fosters calm and balance and provides an ideal foundation for the musical activities that follow. In addition to individual lessons with their own Master, participants attend ensemble classes and workshops in the afternoon and are given the opportunity to present their progress in short presentation concerts.

Workshops
The Vocal Workshop programme ranges from in-depth exploration of ‘text setting’ in Bach and the expressive possibilities of Baroque repertoire, to broader stylistic frameworks such as early 17th-century monody and madrigals, as well as 19th-century Artsong with fortepiano. In addition, all participants can join practical workshops on effective practice techniques and managing performance anxiety.
